A bit more about the Magic Gardens (#1 below). This Friday, the associated gallery is hosting the opening of Remnants of a City: Leroy Johnson’s Philadelphia. The exhibition promises “a cityscape of recycled materials and urban debris…an ongoing fascination with – and visual love letter to – [Johnson’s] beloved city.” Also, the Magic Gardens are #4 on this list of “visionary recycling” projects, along with artsy post-industrial eye candy in Detroit, a homegrown castle in New York, and San Francisco’s marvelous wave organ. Check it out!

I think there’s something to be said about how preservation works a similar wonder: it takes an overlooked object and treasures it in a way that helps people to recognize its value. More on that later, maybe.
